Reading: We continue to explore nonfiction text features in order to gain information about a topic. We have been comparing and contrasting Nonfiction and fiction books and looking at similarities among books and different topics. This is an important skill for reading comprehension and writing. I have started testing children for their current reading level. So far, I am beaming with pride at the growth they have made this year. Please continue the great work at home. I know it is sometimes challenging to keep the momentum and academic stamina once the weather gets warmer, but we have many weeks of learning ahead of us. I am committed to working hard every day to help your child’s last weeks in first grade very successful ones. One way for you to help your child at home is to ask him/her to RETELL stories to you at home. This is challenging for some children and it prevents them from moving on to the next reading level (including on their reading test). After you child reads, (close the book) ask him/her to start at the beginning and tell you the important events in the story.
Writing: We are publishing our animal reports. These turned out great! Additionally, we are researching the habitats, diets, and important facts about animals that interest the students. We gather information by reading (or using text features in) nonfiction books about an animal and recording these facts on a graphic organizer.
Math: We will have a Unit 8 test this week. Concepts that we are working on include being able to divide a shape into fourths, halves, and thirds. They must be able to write what it means to divide a shape into halves or fourths (to divide it into 2 or 4 equal parts). Also, we are working on counting tens and ones. They must be able to break apart a two digit number into tens and ones. For example: 67= 60+7
Science: Our “lawns” are growing! The kids are so excited about our sprouted grass and alfalfa sprouts. We are learning about the life cycle of plants and certain animals (frogs and butterflies). They should know that the term life cycle means that living things change and grow (stages) throughout their lives.
Social Studies: We are taking the social studies test about maps, places, human and physical characteristics, and directions (left and right).
NWEA: We will take our Math NWEA test on Thursday morning. Please make sure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and gets plenty of rest the night before. I encourage you to talk to your child about the importance of taking his/her time and really focusing during the test. You may send an extra snack to school this day.
Students must circle and count groups of ten for homework tonight. Additionally, there is practice for NWEA testing in reading for homework.
