Feb. 28

Homework tonight involves students making a ten to solve problems. I drew the circles in to help. We will continue to work on this…it’s tricky!

Writing Topic: Make a list of maps that you’ve seen.

We are looking at and constructing maps in social studies. Please look at different maps (the internet is a great resource when you supervise).

Also, please have your child use Moby Max and Myon at home. I am going to be assigning lessons on there that are specific to what your child is learning in math. These programs strongly align with our curriculum and I promise they will help reinforce what we are learning about in class.

Movie Night is Friday, March 3rd.

Click below to watch a quick video about perimeter. I have introduced this to my students and this video provides a great explanation.

Homework 2/27

Tonight’s homework involves students determining whether the equations are equal (the same value or amount on both sides of the equal sign). Please watch the video below with your child, as this reinforces what we are learning in class.

Tonight’s writing topic: Write a BMME chart about your break.

We are learning that synonyms are words that mean the same thing. Click on the video below to allow your child to watch a video about synonyms:

Examples of illustrations

Hi Families,
I wanted to add a couple of examples of student illustrations that were drawn to match the writing topic a couple weeks ago. These students are very enthusiastic about our science unit right now. I am hoping that more students will take time to add illustrations, labels, captions, etc. to their writing topics at home. Happy Sunday to all!

Reading: This week, we will learn about concrete poetry. These are poems that are poems that are written in the shape of the subject or topic. The authors of these poems usually use words that appeal to our five senses or provide information about the topic. This week, students will learn to state the topic of the poem, identify the sensory words in each poem, and write a concrete poem of their own. Additionally, we will look at ways to determine who is telling the story or speaking at various points in the story.

Writing: We will write concrete poems and begin publishing our “How-to Make Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches.” When your child is responding to the topic in their writing journal at home, encourage him/her to have a discussion with you about the topic first. This helps him/her plan his/her writing and helps them all respond more creatively and thoughtfully. They should also be beginning each sentence with a capital letter and ending with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Some of their illustrations are really awesome and advanced. We don’t always have the time or opportunity to add illustrations to our writing at school, so I love that they take their time to include them at home.

Math: We are working on solving for the missing number. These can be tricky, so I encourage you to practice at home and watch the khan academy videos that I post. We are also working on solving story problems with more than two addends. They should be able to determine whether a problem is addition or subtraction. Finally, we are learning turn around facts. So, 5+6 gives the same sum as 6+5

Social Studies: We are going to begin our units on maps, locations, symbols, and map keys. We will learn that maps are illustrations from an aerial or bird’s eye view. This week, we will illustrate a map of our classroom and playground. It would be great if you can look at maps together either online or otherwise just to give your child additional exposure and experience with different map keys, symbols, and details.

Science: We are learning that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Also, they understand how to compare patterns in the earth’s rotation and observations of daily changes in the sun’s position by illustrating the sun and the earth during day and night.

Please remember that our field trip to Lego Land is on Friday. Chaperones received a note last week.

Have a great week!

Hello Families!I hope you are enjoying this fabulous weather. Here are a couple short videos for your child to watch. The first one explains that sometimes a silent e at the end of a word makes the vowel say it’s name (long vowel).

Below are a couple of math videos. The first one shows how to read a simple bar graph and the second one shows how to solve a story problem. These story problems can be tricky for first graders.

Good morning! Here are a few videos that will help explain some of the concepts we are learning about in math and reading. I hope you are having a terrific break! Read those books! 🙂

I know that the numbers are large in the video below, but it will be helpful to watch since the strategy can help them solve similar problems with smaller numbers. MANY students had trouble with this on the test for Unit 5 (I will be passing those back once we return from break).

February 21

Hello Families! Check out these videos below. The first one shows how to regroup numbers to make it easier to add them. It is just like our “make a ten” strategy, but with a larger number. It might be a little more advanced, but I bet if they watch it a few times, they will begin to understand and be able to do it on their own.
