Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to fifth grade!  I am looking forward to an enriching and productive year with you.  I put together this packet for you to help remember our classroom procedures throughout the year.  Please DO NOT throw it away.  Review it with your parents and keep it in a safe place so that you can refer to it whenever you’re in doubt about how our classroom operates.

Organization

We will use many different Duo Tang folders, binders, and notebooks.  This should help you get and remain organized with your classroom material.  Most of the folders will stay at school, however, there is one will travel between your home and school.

  1. Homework Folder. Your plastic folder should be with you every day. I usually assign homework daily, and it’s due the next day unless I tell you otherwise.  I expect you to finish your homework on time and to the best of your knowledge.  I usually don’t grade your homework, but may make exceptions from time to time.  You will always be notified.  Here are the symbols we will use on homework:

+                    Turned in on time and complete

–                     Incomplete work

Late              Work turned in late

Unacceptable work and missed homework must be redone/made up at school missing your recess or fun time.  (I may make some exceptions for students with good record.)  Some missed assignments may negatively affect your report card grade.

On Friday, all your corrected work will go home.  These pieces should be reviewed by   your parents.  Please DO NOT bring them back to school.

In the front pocket of your Homework folder, you will find a monthly calendar with important events listed.  On this calendar, you will also record your daily Homework points.

In the back pocket of your Homework folder, you will find a Home Reading Log on which you will keep track of your reading every night.  I will collect these HRL’s on Fridays.

  1. Assignment Planner. It is in your own interest to keep materials organized and manage your time effectively.  To help you remember your assignments, you will be given an Assignment Planner.  You will record your homework, reminders, messages, behavior points, and important events every day.  You will have to bring this planner with you every day.  I also ask you to have your parents sign the page daily.

Absence and Tardiness

Please be aware that we have LATE beginning time on some Wednesdays.  I will let you know these days, but you can also find them on our district’s website (www.dearbornschools.org).  Our day starts at 8:30, or on these Wednesdays at 9:30, each morning.  At this time, you are expected to be in your assigned class line on the playground.  You should ALWAYS line up in number order to avoid arguments.

If you know that you will be absent or late one day, it is your responsibility to notify the office.  Please have your parents call 827 – 6400 to let the school know of your whereabouts.  If you walk in the classroom after 8:50, I will mark you tardy.  Do your best to be on time every day.  You don’t want to miss an important part of the day and/or disrupt the class.

In case you’re absent, the Absent Work Monitor will collect the assignments for you in the Absent Folder.  Upon your return, I will review the material with you and set a due date for its completion.

Life in the Classroom

  1. Bathroom/Drinks. To make sure that you don’t miss important instruction, we will have bathroom and drinking procedures in place. At any time, only 1 boy and 1 girl may go to the bathroom.  We have a bathroom pass that you will have to use at times.  This way I will know where you are in case I forget that you asked.  You will be able to use the bathroom at the following times:
    1. Before 8:45 (no pass needed)
    2. During indoor lunch recess
    3. After 3:25
    4. Emergency – once in the morning & once in the afternoon during non-instructional time

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO BATHROOM DURING CAFÉ!!!!

  1. Snacks. You are allowed to bring a HEALTHY snack to class and eat it during our snack time.  Junk food will not be allowed in the classroom, and after the first few weeks, it will be confiscated!  Rule of thumb: ask me if you are unsure about something.
  1. Birthdays. You may bring birthday treats to class on or around your birthday. Please let me know a day or two before so that I can plan the day accordingly.  If you wish to bring cupcakes and drinks, it is your responsibility to supply napkins, straws, forks, cups, etc. for I have very limited supply of such things.  Currently we have 21 students.  PLEASE NO SHEET CAKES!!!!
  1. Dismissal. I will stop instruction around 3:20 each day. You will be asked to write down your homework and pack your backpack during this time.  We will leave the room together, and you will be expected to be in line by 3:33 so we can leave on time.  Your parents, siblings, and other family members will NOT be able to pick you up from the classroom.  They will have to wait OUTSIDE of the building.  Please agree on a spot where you will be picked up daily.  In case your parents wish to pick you early, have them call the office
  1. Tests. Tests will always be announced to the class approximately a week in advance. Most of the time, I will send home a study guide to help you focus on important facts and ideas.  Tests MUST BE SIGNED by your parents and RETURNED the next day.  This is to keep your parents aware of your progress.  Occasionally, I will allow test retakes.
  1. Report Cards. You report card will be similar to your previous ones. You will have to bring back the signed envelope the next day.  A grading scale is posted in the classroom.  Of course, you may ask if something is not clear.

Behavior

Individual:

You are expected to follow the Core Values and our classroom rules.  They are designed to keep you and others safe.  To monitor your behavior, we will use ClassDoJo.  Your points that you receive each day AND for Homework will determine your participation in FFT, parties, and the end-of–the-year picnic.

Whole Class:

The behavior of the class will be monitored based on minutes that the class can bank.  These minutes will determine whether or not the class will have party.   I will take minutes from this “bank” in case of disorder, lack of cooperation, or for wasting time.
