Summer Writing Program:

This summer to help you keep up your writing, spelling and grammar skills, Miss Nellie’s 2017-18 5th grade class is asked to write every week. Weekly writing topics are due each Sunday. All writings will need to be completed using Google Docs and ‘shared’ with Miss Nellie, at kieselh@dearbornschools.org  .

This year’s writing assignments will be graded as part of extra credit for the first quarter report card. I will ‘comment’ using Google Docs back to each student, on each assignment. Next week’s writing assignment should include these improvements.

So don’t work ahead!! Makeup writing assignments due to family vacation schedules are allowed but please only one entry at a time. Wait for my ‘comments’ to proceed to next assignment.

This writing assignment is to write a strong paragraph on each of the 10 writing topics listed below, one topic per week, and each is due by Sunday.

All writing topic should:

– use the weekly number

–  followed by your full name as the Google Doc, file name.

Each assignment’s paper is to  be titled, have the week number and your full name at the top center of the paper. Use only a fonts size of 14, Arial font, and use only black type color (for printing purposes). Please no colors.

Each paragraph will consist of five sentences, and should be indented. Proper capitalization and punctuation is important. Each paragraph will need good sentences of at least 5 words per sentence.

How to write a good paragraph? Start with a topic sentence, which is the main idea of the paragraph. The next part of the paragraph, called the transition, where the topic is written about in (3) supporting sentences and then a conclusion, which restates your topic sentence and your opinion.

simple sentence is a group of words that make sense on its own.  Each sentence will always have a verb and a subject. All sentences should have a minimum of five words.

Ancient Egypt Boy’s Costume Idea

Last-Minute Pharaoh Child Halloween Costume

We attend several Halloween activities every year and the kids always have about 3 costumes every year.  This was my son’s Pharaoh costume for the church carnival this year.  I found the head piece at a junk store and just bought an over sized white tshirt to go with it.  I had the belt in my own wardrobe which fit perfect. And his shoes were his normal summer dress shoes for church.

And of course being a boy, what Pharaoh costume isn’t complete without a sword which we got at the Dollar tree.  The snake on the head piece just really set it off.  He wore panty hose to keep warm. He loved it and thought he was the baddest king ever. I thought he may have to have his sword taken away since he is 90 to nothing all the time but he actually behaved and did great.  It was quick, cheap, and easy.

How to Make an Ancient Egypt Girl’s Costume

I can be a bit of a procrastinator at times, and in the past I’ve scrambled last minute to make Halloween costumes for my kids. Although they all happened to work out in the end, thank goodness, it was way too stressful for my liking. So this year I told myself I would ‘get on it’ earlier. I started working on it over the weekend. We used materials around the house: a pillow case, a paper shopping bag, and vinyl sticker paper.

1. I used a pillow case for Cleopatra’s dress. I traced a dress I found in Maya’s closet onto the white pillow case.  I chose a dress with simple lines. I left a 1cm seam allowance around the perimeter of what I traced. Cut out then sew.

2. For the collar, I made a template out of card stock I had on hand. You can use a cereal box, cardboard, construction paper, pretty much anything that is a little thicker. The template really is a larger circle with a smaller circle inside. Make the inside circle a size that would fit comfortably around the neck. Cut around the larger circle, then cut out the center. It should look like a donut. Cut the ‘donut’ in half. I traced the half onto a gold shopping bag to make the base for the collar.

3. Make another one for the back of the dress. You will need two total.
Sew them onto the white pillow case dress.

4. I used a handle of the shopping bag, which was a nice golden rope that I sewed onto the collar for detail.

5. I then cut out gold vinyl sticker into rectangles and added it to the collar. It accentuates the fanned out look of the collar. I had Maya cut out her own jewels out of red and blue vinyl sticker sheets, then she applied it to the collar. It was a great way to get her involved with her own costume and she had so much fun doing it. We get our vinyl adhesive paper from our local hobbie shop. They sell it by the sheet.

Gold, red, and blue metallic origami paper applied with glue would work nicely too.

She did a terrific job adding the ‘lapis lazuli’ and ‘rubies’ to her collar!  I thought it came out really nice and regal looking considering it was all made with what we had around the house.

I hope you have fun designing your own costume!
