6th Grade

Journal:  Check-In – – You are now starting your 4th week of middle school!  Explain how it has been going for you – the good, the bad, the ugly.

Today in class students read two articles about eating bugs in preparation for their district writing test tomorrow.  As they read, students took notes on both articles in a pro/con chart.

HOMEWORK:  Make sure your reading and notes are done for tomorrow.

8th Grade

Journal:  Story Starter– – In my pocket I had a map, a Jolly Rancher, $24 and I was lost in the middle of nowhere…  finish the story.

Today both classes continued to work on their ad poster.  5th hour FINISHED the poster today.

HOMEWORK:  No homework 🙂

Friday

Thank you to EVERYONE interested in the Upper Michigan trip… we have now filled our seats.  If you are still interested in the trip, you can fill out a registration form for me, but do NOT send the first payment.  I would be happy to put you on the waiting list 🙂

6th Grade (I did not see 3rd hour today – this is NOT for you)

Journal:  Your Choice:  Write about what ever you would like for 5 minutes.

Today we practiced writing claim statements in an exciting game of Claim Throw Down.

HOMEWORK: IXLs Q.1 and Q.2 (90%) are due Monday.  We will be taking part 1 of the district writing test on Monday.

8th Grade (I did not see 1st hour for regular class)

Journal:  Your Choice– – The second one of the school year!

Today I collected book projects from BOTH classes.  5th hour then worked on FINISHING their ad posters.

HOMEWORK:  IXLs O.1, O.2, and P.5 are due Monday (90%)

Students who did not finish NWEA testing this week will be pulled out next week for makeups!  No worries… we will get to all of you 🙂

Thursday

Due to a software issue, we were unable to NWEA test today.  HOPEFULLY, we will resume tomorrow.

6th Grade

2nd and 6th hours:  Journal:  Would You Rather– – swim in a pool of marshmallows or M&Ms?  Explain.

Today we finished our argumentative essay foldable and completed one for Claim Statements.

HOMEWORK:  NEW IXLs… Q.1 and Q.2 (90% proficiency) due MONDAY.

3rd hour:  Journal:  Argumentative – – Explain what you should do when writing an argumentative essay.

Today we practiced writing claim statements in an exciting game of Claim Throwdown.

HOMEWORK: IXLs Q.1 and Q.2 (90%) are due Monday. 

8th Grade

Journal:  Argumentative– – Using a blend of pathos, ethos, and logos argue that school should end in May.

Teams continued their work on their ad campaigns for the product that they were assigned.

HOMEWORK:  Book project is due TOMORROW.

Today teams were assigned a product and they will need to work together to create three different advertisement pitches for the product.  Each of the three ads will focus on ethos, pathos, or logos.

HOMEWORK:  Book project is due Friday.  Complete IXLs O.1, O.2, and P.5 by next Monday (90%).

Monday

I signed 5 more students up for the overnight trip today!  There are still a FEW seats left…  If you are interested, I would sign up this week.  I still have one MOM seat left.

6th grade

Journal:  Story Starter – – When you are as rich as I am, it is easy to live an adventurous life. Just yesterday I took off in the company jet and went… Finish the story.

Today we finished the fact v. opinion discussion and then looked at some key vocabulary words: fact, opinion, evidence, persuasive, and argumentative.  Students then started on putting together an argumentative essay that has been cut apart.

HOMEWORK:  NWEA testing starts again tomorrow – SCIENCE.

8th Grade

1st hour:  Journal:  Your Choice– – The first one of the school year!

5th hour:  Journal:  Pathos– – Using the strategy of pathos, convince your parents you should be allowed to go on the class trip.

In first hour we created a foldable for the terms: pathos, ethos, and logos.  We then re-looked at the ads that we have been studying to classify them in to one of those three categories.

In 5th hour, we finished the classification discussion of the ads and then introduced the first team task to demonstrate understanding of pathos, ethos, and logos.

HOMEWORK:  Book project is due Friday.  Complete IXLs O.1, O.2, and P.5 by next Monday (90%).  NWEA testing starts again tomorrow – SCIENCE.

Friday

Trip interest is high and looking good!  I signed up 4 more students today.  

If you are interested, I expect to be sold out by next week.  I would not wait until October 10th to register 🙂

6th Grade – We are all over the place due to testing!

2nd and 3rd hour journal:  Your Choice – – Write about whatever you would like for 5 minutes.

6th hour journal:  Would You Rather – – eat a dead bug or a live worm?  Explain.

In all three classes I collected journals from this week.  We also worked on distinguishing between fact and opinion using the two articles we have been reading.

HOMEWORK:  Enjoy the beautiful weekend…go to the cider mill…and GO BLUE!

8th Grade – Also all over the place due to testing.

1st hour journal:  Ads– – Explain a television or print ad that is highly effective.  WHY is it effective?  Explain an ad that is not effective.  Why isn’t it?

5th hour journal:  Your Choice– – The first one of the school year!

In both classes I collected the journals from the week.  In short, we worked on the advertisement activity in some capacity today.

Keep that trip money coming!

6th Grade – 3rd Hour

Journal:  Would You Rather – – eat a dead bug or a live worm?  Explain.

Today  students finished reading and dissecting “Summer: 15 Days or 2 ½ Months?”.  Once they were done, in their second language arts notebook we divided it into 2 sections.  The front section will be for resources we will create and the second section will be for work that do in class that will be used for class discussions.  Today, students created a T-Chart and labeled it “Fact” and “Opinion” they then discussed with their groups where the evidence from the two articles belonged and why.

HOMEWORK:  No homework 🙂

6th Grade – 2nd Hour

Journal:  Pizza – – Convince me that pizza is the best or the worst food ever.

Today in class we discussed the arguments that were used in the cat story and discovered that the arguments were all opinion based.  Students then started to read and highlight the essay “Summer: 15 Days or 2 1/2 Months?” in order to see the types of arguments used in this essay.  We will pick up with this tomorrow.

HOMEWORK:  No Homework 🙂

Today groups finished up sorting their slides. They then briefly wrote to explain their thinking before submitting their slides through Google Classroom.  We then started to discuss as a full class how we should group the ads – using the ideas of everyone to come to some kind of group consensus.

HOMEWORK:  If for some reason you did not submit the ad slides to me in class, you need to do this tonight.  Book project is due NEXT Friday.

Wednesday

TRIP UPDATE:  I have room for one more mother… and there are still student seats available!  Get you money and forms in soon 🙂  Don’t be left in the lower peninsula come June 1!

Today in class we reviewed the norms and etiquette when working in a group.  Students then got with their groups to look at a variety of print advertisements that are in Google Classroom.  While looking at the ads, students discussed which ones could be grouped together and why.  Discussion will continue tomorrow.

HOMEWORK:  Book Projects are due NEXT Friday…do not procrastinate!

Tuesday

6th Grade

JOURNAL:  First Impression:  Explain your first impressions of STEM Middle School so far.

WOW!  We did lots today in class!  Students were introduced to journal topics and procedures.  They will get a topic at the beginning of each class and will need to write quietly on the topic for five minutes and fill half a page.  I will collect all journals from the week on Fridays.  If students are absent, they need to check here on the blog for the topic that they missed.

Today we also started to gather information to answer our first essential question:  What does an author do to write a clear and convincing argument for a public audience?  Students worked with their group to read an essay and highlight the author’s arguments – we will discuss this as a full class tomorrow.

HOMEWORK:  NWEA Reading test tomorrow.

8th Grade

NO journal today.  Students took their district writing assessment and submitted their article notes through Google Classroom.

HOMEWORK:  NWEA Reading test tomorrow.  First book project is due next Friday!
