Week at a Peek 9/16

Here’s the line up for this week:

In Reading, we are working on the story elements and recounting stories using sequence words. We are also building our stamina for independent reading and writing as we learn and practice our reading and writing strategies.

Spelling – 2nd grade is working on CVC (short a) and CVCe pattern for long a. C is for consonant and V is for vowel. Video Long a video

3rd grade is working on short and long o. Words are: poke, rock, mop, below, and lock. Academic vocabulary: genre, setting, product, quotient, and Michigan. Long o Short o

Math – 2nd grade: Students are working on addition and subtraction strategies within 100. Strategies include make a 10, number bonds, and place value.

3rd grade: Students continue practicing using arrays to write related multiplication and division facts using the commutative and distributive properties.

Science: This week we are learning about forces which push and pull on objects causing motion. We really enjoyed Mystery 1 Activity: Hopper Popper. Here is the link to the video so that you can try it at home! Mystery 1. You can also log into Clever from the Student Portal to access Mystery Science.

Social Studies – 2nd grade will begin their unit on Communities and how communities provide needs and wants for their citizens.

3rd grade – Students will begin using maps to explore the different areas of Michigan.

Remember to please check your student’s folder and planner daily for homework, graded papers, and notes.

Enjoy the Long Weekend

Have a great time this weekend with friends and family! We will see you on Thursday, June 6!

Next Friday, June 7th, we have two fun events in our classroom.

  • NWEA Ice Cream Celebration – We are celebrating our growth and achievement on the NWEA by having an ice cream party! I am supplying the toppings and the ice cream. I am looking for donations of paper bowls, plastic spoons, and napkins. We have 20 students in class. If you are able to help please send the items in with your student on Thursday. Students could earn the following:
    • ice cream – by working hard and doing their best effort
    • 1 topping if their score went up ( 1 for Reading and 1 for Math)
    • a second topping if they met or exceeded their projected score ( Reading and/or Math)
    • Students could earn up to 4 toppings! I am excited to say that EVERYONE earned at least 2 toppings!

 

  • PBIS End of Year Celebration – We are going to be making cardboard robots! Supplies we could use:
    • egg cartons
    • paper towel tubes
    • toilet paper tubes
    • small cardboard boxes (macaroni, rice, snack, cereal boxes)

Week at A Peek 5/20/19

Here is our overview of the week!

No school Friday, May 24 and Monday, May 27, and Monday, June 3 – Wednesday, June 5.

Our last Spelling Test will be May 31.

Our final Grade Level PBIS reward will be Friday, June 7.

Subject Focus Vocabulary
Reading We are working on how a character responds to a challenge and how his response reveals his character traits. We will also be comparing different versions of a story. challenge, response, traits, compare, contrast
Spelling Adding suffixes to a word changes it’s meaning and the part of speech it is. suffix, base word (root word), noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
Writing We have finished both an opinion and an informational piece last week. We will now be writing a combination of informational and opinion writing to create a brochure about 2nd grade to give to next year’s class. brainstorming, bullet points, drafting, revising, editing, publishing
Math We are starting a new unit that will lay the foundation for multiplication and division through arrays, equal groups, and repeated addition. array, column, row, odd, even, equal groups, repeated addition
Science We are learning about different habitats for plants and animals and how they get what they need to survive.
Social Studies We continue learning about businesses and the resources they need and the choices they have to make. natural resource, human resource, capital resource, scarcity, opportunity cost, needs, wants, goods, service
