News from the Jungle

NWEA testing is under way. Almost all of the children have been tested on reading. Today we began the math test. We will continue this portion of the test next week.

Next week I will also begin DRA testing the children. This test is used to determine the children’s reading levels.

Please continue to put your child on readingeggs.com at home and have them do a couple of lessons each night.  This can count on the reading log in the homework for some of the nightly reading!

The end of the year is quickly approaching! Please take a look and make note of the upcoming events for May and June! The PTA calendar with most of these events listed came home this week in your child’s green folder.

Agenda for the Week

Reading/Writing:  We have been watching lots of videos and reading lots of books about ocean animals. The children love learning new facts about ocean animals. We are reading articles and answering questions about key details in the text. Next week the children will be assigned with a specific ocean animal to learn about. I will help them in class to research this animal and write a report about it. I will be sending a note home with the animal each child is researching and I am asking that you help them create that animal at home! In the past, some families have found cute crafts online (pinterest, youtube, etc), and other families have used wood, plaster, recycled materials and made 3D models of the ocean animal. It all depends on how much time you and your child would like to put into the project. The children will present their craft/model and report on their ocean animal to the class and we will even invite all of you to come in and see the crafts/models and reports! There will be a note with more details about this coming home soon!

Math: We took our -4 math quiz today. Today, I sent home the -5 flashcards for practice. We will take the -5 quiz on Friday, May 5th.

This week in math we reviewed for the NWEA test.

Science: We talked more about earth day and ways we can help the earth by recycling, reusing, and reducing.

We also focused on our ocean unit and made some crafts to go along with the animals we learned about. This week the children made sea turtles, seahorses, and crabs.

Here is a picture of our paper plate sea turtles, paper plate seahorses, and hand print crabs!

Social Studies: We continued to look at the globe and talk about the oceans. We talked about where each of us has family living or where we may be originally from around the world. While learning about certain ocean animals this week, we learned which oceans they live in and we looked at the glob to reinforce where these animals are in the world.

Housekeeping Items:

The class as a whole has been super talkative. It is making instruction more and more difficult on a daily basis. Please remind the children that the rules at school and in our classroom have not changed. With the warmer weather, we are all getting restless for summer!

Children need a snack each day! Please do not send candy as a snack. The children need a healthy snack each day such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc.  As a reminder, no juice is allowed in class for snack.
