Are home schooled high schoolers allowed to be a part of your athletic teams?

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: February 6, 2013 at 4:20 pm

No. You must be enrolled as student at Dearborn High School in order to be eligible to participate on our sports teams. The same rule applies for all high schools — you must be enrolled in order to participate.

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: August 18, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Alex — boys swimming is a winter sport — practice starts Monday, November 25th and baseball is a spring sport — practice starts Monday, March 10th, 2014. Contact Coach Polk (polkd@dearbornschools.org) for information on swimming and Coach Schleif (schleim@dearbornschools.org) for information on baseball — they are both teachers in the building.

If my incoming freshman is planning to do a winter or spring sport, can I pay the $100 pay to play fee at orientation so she has the athletic pass for fall rather that buy one in fall for $25 the have to pay the $100 in winter?

  • Jeffrey Conway says on: August 21, 2013 at 3:58 pm

Hi SC — what we’ve been advertising is for students who are not playing fall sport to pay the $25 now to get the athletic pass and then they will owe $75 if/when they play a winter or spring sport. You’re certainly welcome to pay the whole $100 now, too, but no one will end up paying $125.

Highly unlikely. Field conditions are ok at this point but the weather forecast does not look promising. We try to make a decision by noon if we are going cancel games due to inclement weather.

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: June 9, 2014 at 9:30 am

The Activity Fee for 2014-15 will be $100 (a one time fee — not per sport). Conditioning is not mandatory for any sport, but it’s certainly recommended you attend whenever possible to get in shape for the season, meet the players and coaches, etc. It helps to build camaraderie going into the new school year, too.

  • Jay says on: June 9, 2014 at 12:28 pm

also the money do we pay it after or before the tryouts???
if u dont make the team do u still have to pay?

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: June 9, 2014 at 12:39 pm

In sports where there are cuts (like soccer) you only have to pay the Activity Fee if you make the team.

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: June 24, 2014 at 11:04 am

Conditioning and training are not mandatory for any sports. Football practice officially starts on Monday, August 11th. Contact Coach John Powell at powellj@dearbornschools.org for information about specific dates and times. An athletic physical must be on file before you participate in any sports.

I’m not sure which sport you are asking about, but football, boys soccer, boys cross country, girls cross country, field hockey, and volleyball all have conditioning and mini-camp activities going on at various points over the summer. Contact the head coaches from those sports for more specific information — their contact info is on our blog.

Dearborn Public Schools do not accept students from outside our school district’s attendance area. We are not a school of choice district. Within the district, there is also no school of choice. Students attend the school in their attendance area unless the school board approves a boundary line exception. “The girls varsity soccer team advanced to the MHSAA District Tournament final with a 1-0 win over Edsel Ford on Thursday, May 28th. Gillian Neubert scored the winner in the first half on a free kick. DHS will play Garden City for the district championship on Friday, May 29th at 7:00 PM at DHS. Congratulations and Good Luck to Coach Alabakoff and the girls varsity soccer team!”

The goal scored this game was from Nina Gutierrez not Gillian Newbert. Since this was a pretty big game it would be fair to give credit to the correct player. Could you please check on this? Thank you

My son plays the football and he likes a scholarship for the money to go to college. He would like the a picture of him when he plays to send to the college coaches. Who can do this?

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: October 19, 2015 at 9:39 am

Your son should have a HUDL account set up through the school (that’s the video/scouting software that we use). He can use that software to make a highlight tape of himself and share it with whoever he wants. The football coaches should be able to help him do this.

      • Armand says on: October 23, 2015 at 7:49 am

Thank you very so much. If he is a good at the football he will have a chance to college yes?

        • Jeffrey Conway says on: October 23, 2015 at 9:49 am

The chance of any high school athlete playing in college is very small — but if he is good enough and finds the right fit there is always that chance that he plays at the next level.

Do you recommend kids who are decent or “okay” in athletic sports to join any of them?

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: November 9, 2015 at 10:10 pm

Yes. High school sports are designed for participation by many as opposed to participation by just elite athletes. The best option for someone who is a beginner would probably be to join one of the many no-cut sports we offer at Dearborn High – that eliminates the pressure of making it through tryouts and the possibility of being cut from the team. We had over 600 athletes participate in sports last year and only a few of them would be considered elite. The vast majority are participating to have a great high school experience but won’t play beyond their high school career.

The all-league information comes to us from the coaches — I will check with Coach Bridges and get the boys XC all-league names from him.

The all-area stuff is published by the Press and Guide — their publication schedule is not something we have any control over.

    • Jeffrey Conway says on: May 29, 2016 at 8:07 am

It depends on which team you are talking about. Sports that have cuts will not be accepting anyone new at that late of a date. Most fall sports start practice on August 10th so you are talking about missing almost three weeks. Non-cut sports would be an option — contact the specific coach for information. Contact information for all coaches is posted on our blog.

A cross-town rival cannot be replaced. Why would anyone allow this to happen?

Unfortunately, Edsel Ford joining the Downriver League and Dearborn High joining the Kensington Lakes Activities Association in 2018-19 will not allow us to continue to play each other in football for the time being. We also did not play in 2002, 2007, and 2008. Both leagues have closed football schedules — there are no opportunities for out of conference games. However, we will continue to play each other in almost all other sports. The decisions for us to move to the DL and KLAA were made based on the best interests of the current and future student-athletes at each school and the approximately 50 athletic teams that each school sponsors, not just on one rivalry football game. Hopefully, the opportunity for us to re-connect in football will arise in the future.

JV basketball tryouts for boys will begin on Monday, November 13th. You should attend all meetings and pre-season open gyms that you can. You will need an athletic physical on file to tryout, too.

You must have a completed athletic physical form on file before you can tryout for a winter sport. You can bring it to tryouts, but if it is incomplete you will not be allowed to participate. Make sure all sections are filled in.
