Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

What is TerraCycle?

From the TerraCycle website:

TerraCycle is Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the “non-recyclable.” Whether it’s coffee capsules from your home, pens from a school, or plastic gloves from a manufacturing facility, TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste. With your help, we are able to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfills and incinerators each month.

Haigh is currently collecting CapriSun drink pouches and Clif Bar wrappers as part of the TerraCycle Brigade Program.  If your child enjoys CapriSun or Clif Bars at lunch time they will be encouraged to place the used wrappers in the appropriate recycling containers.  Periodically, the wrappers will be shipped to TerrsCycle for recycling.

Be Fantastic!

recycle plasticDid you know…?

  • The energy saved from recycling one plastic bottle can power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour.
  • It takes just 25 pop bottles to make one fleece jacket!
  • Every year, an estimated 17½ billion plastic bags are given away by supermarkets. This is equivalent to over 290 bags for every person in the UK.

Crayola ColorCycle

Crayola ColorCycle

As part of our Green Schools commitment Haigh is part of Crayola’s ColorCycle.  Crayola and schools across North America are banding together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. That’s  why Crayola started ColorCycle. Through this initiative, students in K-12 schools across the continental United States and parts of Canada can collect and repurpose used Crayola markers.  ColorCycle is also a great opportunity for teachers and their students to explore eco-friendly practices.

Here at Haigh we are collecting our old Crayola markers and sending them into Crayola for re-purposing.  Join the collection!!!

America Recycles Day

Haigh Families,

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Every year on or around November 15, organizations create events to promote this special day and teach our kids global citizenship, the importance of keeping our planet beautiful and the positive impact recycling has for our Earth.

To help celebrate America Recycles Day, we are hosting a school-wide bottle cap drive. We will be collecting all bottle caps from now until November 15. Your support in this collection will help our school come together as a community, learn the importance of recycling and recognize our proud title of being a “Green School.”

Thank you in advance for your participation and support! Happy collecting!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Buenting & Ms. Otto, Green School Committee
