Overview
Summary: The purpose of this is to provide students with the necessary tools in order to be successful in learning in a virtual environment. 
Approximate Timeline: While the time may vary from student to student, This is designed to be completed in approximately 45 minutes.  We expect every student to participate in this in order to ensure a quality experience in your virtual classrooms.

1. Becoming a Successful Online Student
One of the most important components of any learning is your attitude! Be sure to bring Tractor Vision: Education with a Purpose for all Students.  Also, be adaptable…you’ve got this! Before you start any class, take some time and read through this checklist.  Set yourself up to win and remember, this is an extension of Fordson High School, we want your best effort, attitude and behavior.  Be Positive, Be Safe and Be Kind.  Remote Learning: Student Etiquette General Tips
1. Be respectful. While it is easier to say hurtful or disrespectful things without standing face-to-face with someone, it is important to remember that your classmates and teachers are real people who are affected by the words you say and write.  It is essential to keep in mind the feelings and opinions of others, even if they differ from your own. If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t say it online either.2. Be aware of strong language, all caps, and exclamation points. It is easy for written text to be misread and misunderstood.  Have you ever sent a text message with good intent but your recipient thought you were being rude? If so, then you’ve experienced this firsthand.  By being cognizant of strong language, you can identify potential confusions before sending messages. Tip: Read everything out loud before you send it.3   3. Be careful with humor and avoid sarcasm. We love to see your personality shine through          in online classes.  Many of our teachers are exceptionally funny too. But like mentioned in          Rule #2, make sure that it is clear you are being funny and not being rude. Emoticons and          smileys can be helpful when conveying humor so that it is read correctly. Just remember to          keep the smiley faces away from academic papers. 4. Yes, grammar and spelling matter. While texting, textspeak can b gr8 4 ur friends.  In an educational setting (even online) however, keep it formal.  Your written communication should be professional and reflect proper writing style.  Save written shortcuts and less than stellar grammar for Social Media sites if you must, but follow grammar rules for school.5. Cite your sources. Whenever you are sharing an idea that originated from someone else (even if it is not word for word), it is good practice to cite that source.  This applies to discussion forums too. If you read a great thought in your text, share it, but be sure you let your audience know where you saw it first.6. Don’t post or share (even privately) inappropriate material. Enough said there. Nothing is truly private online.7    7. Be forgiving. Remember that not everyone will know these rules before posting. Try to be        understanding of others when they struggle with written communication.  It is very          different than simply talking to a person face-to-face.       8. 3. How to Navigate your Learning 
On the Dearborn Public Schools website, you can access Clever, Google Classroom, iLearn and much more.   Dearborn Public Schools Home Learning Hub  This site is designed to be a resource for students and families during the Michigan state-mandated school closure period. 
Some teachers will have you access your coursework from their blog, while others may use Google Classroom or iLearn.  You can access all of these on the DPS Home Learning Hub. Remember, it will be important to check your district email often as we will use that to send out important school information during the closing.
Classroom is the primary online tool that teachers will use to communicate learning plans.  While this may not answer all your Google Classroom questions, it is designed to make sure you know how to access your Google Drive, and use other online platforms. Student Sites Tutorial- includes iblogs, Khan Academy, Clever, etc. Google Drive Tutorial Video – includes creating/naming folders, documents, uploading pictures and videos from phones to Google DriveHow to take Screenshot on a Chromebook. Once you take a Screenshot, a window will pop up on the bottom right of your screen to access your recents folder to find it.How to Join Google Classroom How to Navigate Google Classroom-Navigating a course, adding private comments and sending an email. How to turn in Assignments on Google Classroom How to use Accessibility Apps– includes magnifier, translation, speak-to-text, text-to-speak, etc. How to Navigate through Ilearn– Includes logging in, attaching assignments, going through lessons and other features teachers could have. 
4.  Communicating using Video Conferencing

When are the weekly assignments assigned and when are they due? Assignments are posted every Monday by 11:00 amAssignments will be due by midnight on Sunday.

As of Monday, April 20, 2020 – ALL classroom activities for ALL students COUNT towards earning credit for each class. All activities will be assessed through STUDENT engagement and STUDENT participation. STUDENTS who are having difficulty with the activities or participation are to reach out to their teachers for additional support. Teachers will be logging contact with students as well as maintaining records of STUDENT engagement and participation. 

In the Governor’s Executive Order, it is mandated that students are to continue their education to prepare them to transition to the next phase of their education and complete the Michigan Merit Curriculum for graduation. That means that the answer is YES, ALL STUDENT assignments and participation counts for every student at Fordson High School.

Here’s a few highlights for online learning:

  • Starting this Monday April 20th, students need to check in with their teachers twice a week and submit their work each Sunday (see below) to get credit for 2nd semester.
  • Students who are checking in regularly and passing 75% of their assignments have the ability to earn an “A” on their report card for 6th card marking and semester 2. Go get those A’s!
  • Teachers will list new assignments for the upcoming week every Monday by 11:00 am.
  • Students need to participate in Google Hangouts with teachers each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday according to the Weekly Check-In Schedule listed in the chart below. Please schedule your personal lives around this schedule.
  • Assignments for the week are due by 12am (midnight) on Sunday. 
  • There will be no end of semester finals.
  • Seniors last day will still be May 21st for classwork.
  • Teachers will be using their existing platforms for communication as before.
  • Chromebook distribution – we will notify you via robocall when we will pass out Chromebooks.
  • Please communicate with your teachers or counselors if you’re unable to check-in or complete any work.
  • The expectation is that students should be completing 30 minutes of work per subject per day. 
  • If you need support, please reach out to one of the administrators. Our priority is on the safety and health of all staff and students. We must continue to support each other, our students and parents socially and emotionally at this time. Many of our families are dealing with significant financial issues.

Google Meet/Hangout Etiquette Guide for Students

  1. Take a Look at your video BEFORE joining the Hangout. Make sure that everything in the video (especially the background) is appropriate.
  2. When you enter the Meet/Hangout, mute yourself (If you are already not muted.)
  3. When you have a question, type in the textbox and wait for your teacher to call on you.
  4. When you have something to contribute to what is being said, but it is not your turn, use the chat feature in the right-hand corner.
  5. Wait for the teacher to call on you to unmute yourself.
  6. Only one student should contribute/talk at a time
  7. Look into the camera when you are talking.
  8. Stay attentive. Pay attention to your teacher or other students who are speaking.
