Middle School Message

If you are going to STEM next year you will need to check their blog for information regarding summer requirements.

Here is a link to the slide show explaining this summer work. You must be signed in with your student district email to view the slide show. It will not work if you are not and I can’t do anything to make it work with a private email.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/19R7k1b5d_jxWbqoVIc_OMpDisn03HoWB/view?usp=sharing

I will be going over the slide show tomorrow at our BBB meeting at 1:00 pm.

The middle schools have asked us to share this letter with all fifth graders.

2020 Summer Learning: Math and Literacy

Dear Parent/Guardian,

According to Johns Hopkins University, the effects of summer learning loss can result in nearly a three-month loss in grade-level equivalency in math and a two-month loss in grade-level equivalency in reading.   As a result of the school shut down, estimates suggest students will return in the fall 2020 with roughly 70% of the learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year.  However in mathematics, students are likely to show much smaller learning gains and in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would observe in normal conditions. In order to close the summer learning loss gap in reading and math, middle school students will be  expected to complete Summer Learning before they return in the fall.  Teachers will grade the completed summer work when school opens in August.  Below are the expectations for math and literacy.  Thank you so much for supporting your child’s development through summer learning.

Math:

  • Complete 60 minutes of Khan Academy practice a week (Practice only, videos will not count), based on their NWEA level.
  • Students need to access Khan through Clever from the Dearborn Schools Student page.

DO NOT LOG IN FROM THE STUDENT’S PERSONAL  ACCOUNT

Below is the grade breakdown by minutes for Math.480+ minutes    A                 384 – 479           B                  336 – 383           C       288 – 335           D

Literacy:

  • Read a minimum of two books of your choice before you return in the fall.
  • Then, in your English Language Arts class you will complete some sort of evaluation. This could be in the form of a book talk, a one-pager, or a small project about your reading. These are generally related to characters, conflicts, plot, and lessons learned. Please refer to building blogs for more specific information.

Good morning! Welcome to the last week of 5th grade! I am so proud of all the hard work you have done this year, especially at home. I am thankful for your efforts and those people that have been helping you through this crazy end of the year. We worked hard and we made it. This year will be something we never forget. You nnow know you are up for anything that comes your way.

This week we will be catching up on all any missing assignments. I will not be posting any new ones. Please take time TODAY, to go through your child’s Google Classroom with them and look for any missing assignments assigned by me. Check assignments as many have been handed in unfinished or blank. Then, open Readworks and check for missing assignments there too. I am looking for all missing assignments to be completed by today at the absolute latest, so I have time to grade them and complete report cards. All missing assignments will be a 0 in the grade book.

Materials Pick-UP News:

If you didn’t have a chance to make it, please plan on coming in today from 10-12 pm. You will need to ring the buzzer and someone will come out to hand you your child’s belongings as well as collect any materials you have that belong to the school/teacher. The drop-off and pick-up will include medications and yearbook/spring pictures (if you ordered). Please remember that Chromebooks will be returned at the start of next year unless your child is a 5th grader or is leaving to another school.

We appreciate your support in getting these materials sorted so that we may begin our summer work to prepare for next year. Any materials not picked up by Thursday will be discarded.

You can continue to take advantage of the resources we have been using until the free subscriptions run out. The kids can log into Raz Kids, Zearn, Knowledge on The Go, and Scholastic News for additional help and practice on skills over the summer. They also can use Khan Academy as well.

MISSING!!!

We have several items we need returned to Lindbergh. Please check out this post and see if you have any of these items.

Students each received at least one of these books for reading group on March 13th. Students did writing assignments based on the books so everyone had one at home in March. After our material drop off day, we are still missing more than half of them. Please check your rooms, backpacks, shelves etc. These books are from the Lindbergh book room and need to be returned there.

We are missing quite a few safety belts. Please check backpacks etc. and return any you find to Lindbergh.

Our classroom is also missing at least one of each of the books pictured below. These are from our LLI kit and cannot be replaced. Please check backpacks, folders, and binders. If you find these items, please return them to Lindbergh.

WOW! I can hardly believe we are this close to the end of the year! It seems like yesterday you all walked into room 205 and now you are ready for your adventures in middle school! I am proud of all of you. It was a crazy year but all of you have stuck with it and have grown so much it’s amazing! I can’t wait to see all of you on Thursday for your promotion ceremony and the bag pick up!

***I have to get everything ready for report cards soon. Please check to be sure you have all assignments done and turned in. Check both Readworks and Google Classroom. Any unfinished work needs to be done by the end of the day today. Also, check your progress on Zearn. Are you caught up? If not try to work on a few lessons.

Math: Make sure you are done with all your math assignments on Google Classroom. Then check Zearn to see if you are caught up. today is the day to work on both of these. If you are caught up you can move along with more lessons on Zearn or do some math on Moby Max.

Science: If you have not finished the Web of Life Assessment on Google Classroom you need to do that today. When you are done, here is a fun Mystery Science mini-lesson.

https://mysteryscience.com/mini-lessons/unicorns?code=6aec002def80623e7726adcd4752c99b

ELA: If you are caught up on all your Readworks and Scholastic News assignments then go to Raz Kids and read at least one book. If you are not caught up then today is the day to do whatever needs to be completed.

Social Studies: The Articles of Confederation are not helping to run our country correctly. They give all the power to the states and left the federal government weak. When the delegates meet in Philadelphia, they decide that instead of fixing the Articles of Confederation, they will write a new document that organizes our government. It’s pretty incredible to think that a document written in 1787 is still being used to run our government and protect our rights in 2020. Watch what happens in this final episode of Liberty’s Kids. (I know…I’m sad it’s the last one too.) Then read the articles and go to Google classroom to take the quiz.

Click on the links for informational articles about the Articles of Confederation and the US Constitution.

Here’s a fun read aloud about the writing of the Constitution. I actually showed this in class on Constitution Day, September 17th, but it might be good for a little review.

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 5/26 – 5/29 please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week 6/1 – 6/5.  I will not be accepting work after June 5th at 5 pm due to the district’s timeline for entering grades for report cards so please be sure you have all your work handed in.

Dear Parents,

As the school year is coming to an end, we wanted to take this time to thank you for all of your continued support and understanding.  None of what we have accomplished could have been possible without the strong partnership we have as a community.

Our plan this week is to have a day for material pick-up and drop-off.  The day is currently planned for today, Thursday, June 4th in the afternoon.  In order to maximize safety, we have assigned timings based on your child’s last name.  If your child’s last name begins with the letter A-M, the pick-up/drop-off time will be from 12:00-1:30pm.  If your child’s last name begins with the letter N-Z, the pick-up/drop-off time will be from 1:30-3:00pm.

We ask that students do not accompany adults and that we practice safety precautions at all times.  Please plan on coming with a mask on, practice social distancing and come in to pick up items and leave immediately.  We greatly appreciate your support in keeping everyone safe and healthy.

Below are a few important pieces of information to be aware of:

  • Pick-up/Drop-off will occur on the South Playground (near Myrte).
  • There will be an area marked for each classroom teacher.  Student materials have been placed in brown paper bags and extra material in a plastic bag ready for pick up with your child’s name.  There will also be a basket with the teacher’s name there for you to drop off any classroom books/materials.  These items should be placed in a bag, clearly marked with your child’s name.  Please remember, some students have lots of items, so come prepared.
  • In the lot, there will also be bins for you to drop-off:
    • library books
    • classroom collection books
    • reading group books
    • Social Studies History Atlas
    • musical instruments
    • safety belts
    • service squad pins

Please clearly mark your child’s name on these items by either placing them in a bag or using a piece of masking tape.

  • There will also be a table to pick up your child’s medicine, anything left will be disposed of according to policy.
  • If you have been collecting pop tabs, we will also have the box outside to collect those pop-tabs.
  • Yearbooks and Spring Pictures have come in, there will be a table set up for those.  5th graders will get their yearbook in their promotion bags.

Since this will all occur outside, we are hoping that the weather cooperates.  If things change, we will let you know.

Have a wonderful day!

Ms. Tiba

Social Studies: The war is over but not everyone in America is free. Meanwhile, King George lll seems to be having trouble understanding that Great Britain is no longer in charge of America. Episodes 138 and 139 will be watched out of order because I want to be sure we are watching in correct historical order. There will be a quiz on Google Classroom on Friday which will include information from today so be sure you are watching carefully. You could even take notes!
