Important Days to Remember
Gym on Tuesday-Please remember to wear tennis shoes and bendable clothes (not jeans or slip on shoes).
PICTURE DAY IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 23rd.
PLANNER
Please bring them every day.
FRIDAY SPELLING TESTS
Every Friday there will be a spelling test. Please practice every day with your child so that they will do well on the Friday Spelling test. Corrected tests are sent home on Monday for you to sign and send back to show me that you know the score.

MATH MATH MATH MATH MATH
We are doing number stories (story problems),addition and subtraction. If your child has trouble adding, please work with him/her. Use real objects and try the homework shortcuts toward memorizing addition and subtraction facts. Please practice the homework ideas to learn math facts.
Look for the study guide that will come home next week before the Unit 2 test.

Science
We continue to learn that our world is made up of Matter. We made a flip book with the definitions of the 3 states of matter. Can your child name all 3?
We are learning about insulation and the melting point of matter, as one of the properties of matter.

Social Studies-
Thank-you for signing and returning the Columbus report which was sent home for your child to explain/read/present at least 3 things from the report signed by 5 people. Please sign and return, if your child has not returned the Columbus report. We also wrote an opinion paper about whether we would or would not go with Columbus.
We continue to learn what a community is in Unit 1. Please talk about about our community’s characteristics as you drive/walk through Dearborn. These include the businesses, buildings, natural things, transportation and places to have fun. Your child needs to understand what each characteristic is and give examples.
We also learned that there are 3 types of communities. Can your child describe the difference between a city, suburb and the country or rural community?
We will have a social studies test next week. A study guide will go home. Please sign and return the study guide with your student. The vocabulary will be tricky for some students, since it was new to them this year. We have done lessons with it, though.

Reading- Read, Read, Read!

BOOK BAGS! Please observe how your child does with these books. Every book at level 18 (the level for second grade entry) for example, may not be read easily, depending on the words. Please ask you child to write a list of the words that they do not know, so you can work on them.
Please keep them in the bag and count the books, so they do not get lost. I will trade out the books every other week or so. Students should reread books until they are smooth and fluent when reading. Students record on their log when they read.

BOOK IT CALENDARS
Please be sure that your child reads something at least 20+ minutes per day and then color in the day on the BOOK IT acorn calendar that was sent home. Your child gets a coupon each month for a Pizza Hut personal pan pizza when they bring a completed calendar in. In addition, reading aloud to your child is important also.
HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION
We will have a Halloween celebration on Tuesday, October 31st at the end of the day. You can send in candy, pencils, stickers etc. (if you want) which we will put in bags to go home. We will also have healthy snacks, if anyone can donate them. Perhaps, we can have one cookie or cupcake also, if anyone wants to write a note to bring them. We will need juice boxes also, from a volunteer. Then pretzels or cheese-its, fruit cups, fruit roll-ups etc. are good choices. We need someone to volunteer plates too. Thank-you for helping out. There are 25 students.
Students can dress up or not dress up . It is up to them. They bring their costume in a bag for after lunch. I get about half a class that does not dress up, so your child should not stay home if they don’t want to dress up. Please no guns, swords, blood, etc..
Parents and friends are invited to the Halloween parade around the track at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Then we will have a party with volunteer snacks and a game.

Have a great weekend with your wonderful child!
